about

Daniel Spicer writes: "On Saturday 17th October 2020 at 3pm, I went into the Verdict jazz club in Brighton, sat at the baby grand piano and recorded four improvisations. It was during one of those rare periods of relative freedom between lockdowns and, aside from a few park jams, was the first time I had made any music in months, the closest i’d come to a gig in a long time. I am not a piano player in any formal sense of the word - not even really a musician - but I love to explore and express myself on whatever instruments are to hand. On this occasion, the piano sounded amazing, piling up great shimmering walls of harmonics in the empty, chilly room. All four improvisations recorded that afternoon are included on Just Flames. I enjoyed making them. I hope you enjoy hearing them.”

Daniel Spicer (In Threads, Bolide, Brighton Alternative Jazz Festival, The Wire) plays four piano improvisations, two each side of the clear vinyl 10” lathe. They are immersive, purposeful and have an innate structure of their own logic. You can almost see the piano shimmering in the candlelit darkness. Mastered by Jamie Moore and cut by 345rpm the sound is crisp and warm as the music unfolds through the grooves of the lathe. We are delighted to present the new recordings by Daniel Spicer who thrilled us last year with In Threads “Orange Justice” LP on Eyeless Records.
